Quicker than JTAG solutions, the latest MicroMaster Test Toolkit from International Test Technologies offers one of the fastest in-system programming tools currently available. MicroMaster can program on-board eeproms and flash memory at speeds up to and greater than 1MB every 10 seconds.*
MicroMaster’s Fast Flash Programming is performed via CPU Emulation: access to the board is via the CPU’s debug port. Using this dedicated port to run the CPU’s built-in debug commands (e-JTAG) avoids the long scan chain overheads often involved when using Boundary Scan techniques.
Major speed increases are also obtained by block-downloading the flash image into the board’s RAM, together with a compact programming algorithm. When the algorithm is executed on the board, it runs at full CPU speed, eliminating repetitive command and data transfers over the serial debug port.
Applications for MicroMaster’s Fast Flash Programming utility are in board manufacture and high-volume board firmware upgrades. Some simple flash-specific program development is required to implement the Fast Flash Programming utility, but in high volume applications, this development requirement is far out-weighed by the resulting cost savings.
